Why is it that alot of people are ashamed to tell anyone that they listen to pop music?

Depending on where people live, the music that is most popular, people listen to it because of that reason. If expressing other interest, their peers may think they are corny or "Too White" or "Too Black". Like black people listening to rock and country music when majority of their family and community listens to hip hop and r&b. Or white people listening to hip hop when majority of their community listens to rock or pop.
