A friend of mine kills and cooks grey squirrels from his garden, is this legal in the UK?

He literally shoots them with an air rifle, skins them, and stews them as if it were any other meat. Aside from the fact it is completely gross...I am pretty sure you can't hunt and kill wild animals in the UK, not to mention eat them. Or is this legal, provided you don't sell the the food to other people?
