Good metaphors for family?

i could think of a bunch of them if i had more time, but i think that if you compared a dyfunctional family to a rotting tree and a worn out blanket it would have the same effect and give a visual that people could relate with rather than thinking of something more intricate to be unique...although i think either way would be unique
